Team Vitality’s Slump and Issues with Bo1 Matches — Highlights from the “Hot Take Point Made” Podcast with Thorin, Pimp, and Mauisnake

A new episode of the Hot Take Point Made podcast featuring analysts Duncan “Thorin” Shields, Jacob “Pimp” Winneke, and Alex “Mauisnake” Ellenberg has been released. Here’s a quick rundown of the highlights in our article.

According to Mauisnake, the debate over the greatest roster in Counter-Strike history remains open, though he continues to favor the legendary Astralis quintet. The analyst noted that the Danes won three Majors compared to Team Vitality’s two, and both teams have each won 14 Tier 1 LAN tournaments. At the same time, Astralis has also achieved numerous successes in Tier 2 tournaments and demonstrated a more impressive ability to overcome crises — in particular, they managed to bounce back from a slump and win their third Major in a row by defeating Team Liquid at the StarLadder Berlin Major 2019.

Mauisnake also highlighted the length of Astralis’s dominance: the team held the top spot in the HLTV world rankings for one year and 27 days, while Team Vitality spent 179 days at the top. According to the analyst, the Danes also outperformed their rivals in terms of individual balance—all five Astralis players ranked in the HLTV top 20, and dupreeh, device, gla1ve, and Magisk were named MVPs at major tournaments. Separately, Mauisnake compared the teams’ captains and named gla1ve the stronger in-game leader, noting his ability to turn the tide of rounds with key decisions. At the same time, he acknowledged apEX as an outstanding captain who effectively brings out the best in his players, but stated that gla1ve remains, in his view, the greatest IGL in history.

Mauisnake called the notion of Team Vitality’s imminent return to the top “self-delusion” and stated that the era of the current roster is coming to an end. According to him, the team has already undergone a mental reset, but was unable to regain its former form after the break and the setback at the last Major, which was particularly evident at the 2026 Esports World Cup for CS2. The analyst does not believe in a new “honeymoon period” for Team Vitality and believes that the second half of the season could be dominated by Team Falcons.

Pimp agreed that Team Vitality is quite capable of winning one of the upcoming tournaments even with a stand-in, especially if Team Falcons can’t consistently perform at the expected level. At the same time, he emphasized that once the starting lineup returns for the Major in Singapore, Team Vitality will be his top favorite to win the title. Thorin also urged people not to write the team off because of isolated setbacks and criticized predictions that they would dominate with a stand-in. According to him, jL won’t be able to fully replace apEX tactically, and Team Vitality’s success at the Major will depend primarily on the strength of its main roster. The analyst also pointed out the double standards of critics who ignore Team Falcons’ setbacks and jump to conclusions based on the results of online matches.

Thorin believes that this season, m0NESY is fully capable of surpassing ZywOo in the race for the title of Player of the Year. In his opinion, the move to Team Falcons has created a more comfortable environment for the sniper, as karrigan takes on a significant portion of the teamwork, allowing the Russian player to focus on his individual gameplay. The analyst also highlighted m0NESY’s versatility and stated that even if he switched to the role of rifler, he would still remain one of the top three players in the world.

Pimp, on the other hand, doubts m0NESY’s ability to maintain the same level of consistency as ZywOo. He noted that the French sniper receives more support from his teammates. At the same time, m0NESY is accustomed to creating opportunities on his own, as he has regularly played alongside IGLs throughout his career who were significantly outmatched by him in firepower. Mauisnake believes that m0NESY still has a good chance of taking first place in the HLTV rankings thanks to potential Team Falcons victories and MVP awards; however, based purely on skill level, donk remains the top contender for the title of Player of the Year in his view. The analyst also noted the Russian player’s progress, as he has become less likely to take unnecessary risks and has significantly improved his consistency compared to his time with G2 Esports.

Pimp spoke out against the constant criticism of tournament formats in Counter-Strike 2 and stated that he sees no problem with increasing the number of bo1 matches at LAN tournaments. In his opinion, full-fledged bo3s are objectively of higher quality, but using them at every stage is impractical. The analyst noted that esports already offers more diverse and well-thought-out systems than traditional sports, and teams must earn the right to play best-of-two series through their performance in the early stages. As an example, he cited the current Major system, where teams first face off in best-of-one matches and then earn the opportunity to play full series.

Mauisnake, on the other hand, continued to criticize bo1 matches due to the high degree of randomness involved. He noted that in best-of-three series, it is much easier for favorites to prove their superiority, whereas a loss on a single map can lead to an unexpected elimination. At the same time, the analyst acknowledged that organizers may use shortened formats for logistical reasons and to conserve resources; however, in his opinion, major tournaments should prioritize the most competitive formats possible. Thorin also spoke out against best-of-1 (bo1) matches, stating that underdog victories in such matches do not always indicate their true superiority. He attributed the increased unpredictability to the MR12 format, where pistol rounds and short economic cycles have a greater impact on the outcome of a match.
