First of all, the Swiss system is random—the higher the percentage of teams that advance, the more that randomness determines the outcome, and 50%, as in our case, is a very high percentage.
The first seedings, with one favorite in each bracket, seem reasonable—since you can’t face both Rakuzan and SCH in two consecutive matches, for example—but in the 1-1 round, someone will face a team from the top half of the bracket, while someone else will face someone from the bottom; and for some, the random draw gave them a lucky break, while for others it didn’t.
You might say something along the lines of, “You’re obligated to win every match if you’re entering a tournament”—but no, you’re not, since they’re determining as many as four slots here, not just one winner. Forget all that romanticism and bravado about “what are they doing at the MCC if they can’t beat everyone in the qualifiers”— that’s all just poetic nonsense with no basis in reality. Teams want to make it to the main event to get practice, realistically assessing their level without aiming for top spots. And when, for example, you’re the 4th seed out of 8 on paper, but in the qualifiers you face two teams from the top three of that ranking, and then a team ranked 5th or 6th advances with a 2-1 score—simply because they happened to face lower-ranked teams twice. Believe me, when you’re in the thick of it, it’s incredibly frustrating when, due to random matchups, teams weaker than you advance simply because they got lucky, while you weren’t even given the chance to play against them to prove you’re better.
Earlier, on August 17, the closed qualifiers for MCC Season 8 took place. The teams Rakuzan, INVISION, CyberHero, and Omnix performed well at the event, earning invitations to the championship’s regular season.
