CyberHero mid laner Amir “Reaper” Ismailov shared tips on playing Selena in a video on the team’s YouTube channel and highlighted several build options for the character.
I mostly play the third build in full-team games: [“Magic Boots,” “Flaming Staff,” “Lightning Staff,” “Lantern of Desires,” “Divine Sword,” “Sacred Crystal”] and these emblems: [“Mage,” “Inspiration,” “Blessing of Nature,” “Deadly Ignition”]. The key here is that we have damage against both squishy and tanky targets; we have a 40% cooldown reduction, which means we can spam our abilities, but we often run out of mana. In the third perk slot, if you’re facing a tanky lane, you can take “Unholy Fury.”
Then there’s a build option—just spam, using the book: [“Magic Boots,” “Enchanted Talisman,” “Flaming Staff,” “Lantern of Desires,” “Divine Sword,” “Sacred Crystal”; emblems: “Mage,” “Inspiration,” “Seasoned Hunter,” “Deadly Ignition”]. That way, you won’t run out of mana, but as I see it, in a full-stack build, if you’re building around the book—which is, of course, the book is built second, after Anti-Chill, but in my opinion, with this build, there isn’t enough damage, and the book isn’t strictly necessary, since you can reach 40% without it and still deal the most damage.
As for combat spells—it’s almost always Flik [“Flash.”—Ed.]. There are rare exceptions when you can choose “Purification.” And the second perk is also interchangeable: you can take movement speed to rotate quickly around the map; or you can take “Second Wind” to reduce the cooldown on “Flash.” I mostly play with Forest emblems to farm the Forest, Turtles, Lords, and so on.
There’s also a second build—this is probably the one I mainly use for solo ranked: [“Sorcerer’s Boots,” “Genius’s Wand,” “Lightning Rod,” “Sacred Crystal,” “Divine Sword,” “Blood Wings”; emblems: “Mage,” “Awe,” “Experienced Hunter,” “Unholy Fury]. This build lets us burst down targets early on with the wand, allowing us to simply “blow up” squishy targets. However, this build has absolutely no cooldown reduction, so skills take a very long time to recharge.
...> You can cover certain distances. You can stun [a nearby creature], jump over it, and move a little further a bit faster.
Next, when using the stun, it’s important to take advantage of textures, because when we use textures, the stun becomes visible later on certain skins, and the enemy might simply not notice it.
If you accidentally use your second ability, you can press the first one to cancel it. Another key point to understand is that Selene’s damage against jungle creeps was increased in one of the patches, so she can help her jungler with Turtles, assist with buffs, and deal damage quickly.
It’s also important to understand that the second ability can be used to clear bushes. ...> And our first ability can be used like wards to gather intel, but it’s important to understand that after a certain patch, our ability no longer illuminates the entire bush, so we might miss someone because of this. If an enemy is standing at the [opposite] edge, we place a marker—they’re not visible, even though they’re in the bushes. If we place a marker in the center, they’ll become visible because the skill’s radius isn’t very large right now.
You can also place markers on textures to highlight important objects that aren’t always easy to collect. For example, let’s say we place one here on the wall; enemies often overlook it, while you’ll be gathering intel from the Lord. <...>
When it comes to the best teammates for her, these are heroes who can apply stuns that can be extended to ensure a solid connect. Heroes like Carmilla, Minotaur, or Marcel—stuns work well with them.
In general, Selena is probably a character where you need to have a feel for the map; you need to understand other players and how they behave in team fights, and figure out who to target and how.
As for annoying opponents, I’d probably single out Hilda, because she’s very hard to take down—she can constantly stack marks; Atlas and Glue. For example, you can pressure Atlas and Glue with stuns because they aren’t very tanky, but they can punish you for jumping into them.
Selena probably isn’t a good fit for beginners because she demands a high level of skill and map awareness.
Previously, streamer and commentator Alexander “Disowned” Tretyakov compiled tier lists of mid-lane champions for solo and team games. He placed Selena in the top tier of both lists; for solo games, Disowned also highlighted Kadita.
