daps: “We just need to play with more discipline.”

NRG coach Damian “daps” Steele spoke in an interview at the IEM Cologne Major 2026 about the team’s current form, preparations for the tournament, and the favorites for the first stage.
On preparations for the tournament
The last two weeks have definitely been tough, especially for br0. We’re doing everything we can, but we’ve had almost no practice leading up to this tournament because he had to go home, then we lost about five days in China that we could have used for training, and then we only had about two days together with him before this tournament. So I don’t want to say that everything is going perfectly, but we’re still confident. To be honest, we didn’t play that badly in China. We faced some good teams. In matches against strong opponents, we had plenty of opportunities, but sometimes we get a little carried away; we give up our leads too often. So we just need to play with more discipline.
On working on mistakes ahead of the Major
I’d say most of what we focused on was related to the period leading up to IEM Atlanta 2026. I think that’s when we made the most progress in the areas where we were really weak. Now it’s more about reminding the players of the things we did well. Of course, when you lose so often, it’s hard for players to see the positives. But if you look at the context, we were playing against strong teams almost the entire time. So the guys need to focus on the positives wherever possible.
On the Stage 1 favorites
In my opinion, there isn’t a single team in this stage where you can say, “Damn, not them.” I’d say that most teams at this stage are pretty close to each other in terms of skill level. Maybe some are a little stronger than the rest, but that’s about it.
