One of the creators of Counter-Strike, Min “Gooseman” Lee, spoke about hostage maps on the Indie Game Joe YouTube channel’s podcast and explained why this mode hasn’t gained popularity in esports.
I liked the hostage maps. However, the fact is that, overall, hostage maps aren’t really suited for esports. It’s just an unbalanced game mode. ...> If you look at it as a casual game mode, I really enjoy playing it. I suppose such maps still exist, but they’re not as popular anymore. People don’t create them very often because they just aren’t played that much. So there’s simply no incentive to create them.
Earlier, Min “Gooseman” Lee cited simplicity and stability as some of the main reasons for Counter-Strike’s longevity. According to him, Valve tries not to make radical changes to the game’s time-tested formula in order to keep it appealing to the competitive scene.
