TeaGuvnor on hero aspects: “I’m glad they just cut them out of the game”

Robson “TeaGuvnor” Merritt, an analyst at the English-language streaming studio, named his favorite patch on Reddit, shared his thoughts on balance, and discussed Valve’s decision to stop releasing Battle Passes.
On balance
Every hero is viable in their own way—provided you truly understand their role in the draft, laning, optimal builds, and power spikes. Most underused heroes remain on the sidelines simply because teams consider them “suboptimal.” However, at any moment, a forgotten hero can suddenly enter the meta, and then everyone will instantly call him overpowered and the strongest.
The meta is constantly shifting, and it’s up to you and the pro players to decide which way it will go. Pros are often conservative when it comes to change, as they’re constantly chasing MMR and have to convince the whole team under conditions of limited practice and constant pressure demanding continuous victories.
On the Disappearance of the Battle Pass
Let me say right away, I don’t know for sure—this is just my opinion. The time spent on the Battle Pass or Compendium takes resources away from other projects. A great example is, of course, “The Fallen Crown”: things like this aren’t done overnight; they take time. Even without that constant dopamine rush—as massive as the release of an event or a game-changing patch. Note that too many such updates can make the game unstable and unpleasant. I will always hold this view: let Valve work in peace; the wait is often worth it.
Besides, Dota has seen a lot of improvements during this time:
— A new arsenal;
— Player profiles;
— Redesigned settings;
— Client improvements;
— New Dota Plus features;
— A host of changes to improve gameplay across the board (both in the client and in-game);
— Quarters;
— A collaboration with Monster Hunter;
— The Compendium is still released every year, just not in the Battle Pass format.
Thanks to these improvements, playing Dota is much more enjoyable.
About my favorite change
The removal of Aspects. The idea was actually pretty good, but over time, it felt like it wasn’t evolving at all. I’m glad they just cut them out of the game.
On the night of June 5, Valve unveiled the “Quarterly Wonders” summer season with sets for Venomancer, Broodmother, and Nyx Assassin, and also released Patch 7.41d, which included balance changes for numerous heroes.
