NiKo: “This year’s Esports World Cup definitely feels like the biggest one yet.”

Team Falcons rifler Nikola “NiKo” Kovač spoke in an interview at the Esports World Cup 2026 about the victory over Astralis, preparations for the playoffs, and the battle for first place in the club championship.

On the victory over Astralis

I think we got a little complacent, tried to close out rounds too quickly, our communication was chaotic, and so on. So I’d say they made some good calls, but we let our guard down a bit, and that could have cost us at least a trip to overtime—and that’s something you always want to avoid, right? But overall, the most important thing is the win. I’m very happy with how we played today and how we approached the match. Making it to the playoffs was, I’d say, the bare minimum, and I’m just glad that we’re gradually improving as well. I think we really did play better today than we did yesterday, so I’m very satisfied for now.

On preparing for the playoffs

It’s not often that we get six days off during a tournament. Obviously, we’ll try to train as much as possible, but we’ll also make sure we go into the playoffs well-rested, because the playoffs can be a long series—four games, I hope. There will probably be some media events and fan meet-and-greets as well; there are a lot of people here, so I’m not entirely sure what they have in store for us, but we’ll do our best to prepare for the playoffs as well as possible.

On the race for first place in the club championship

Yes, we know how important this is for Team Falcons. Not just for Team Falcons, but for all the organizations competing for first, second, and third place. There’s a lot of money at stake, and I’d say that this year’s Esports World Cup definitely feels like the biggest one yet. So far, it’s been a great tournament: so many teams competing, so many players. It’s really great for the game; it’s very nice to see. As for us, last year we were in a slightly different situation. Team Falcons had practically secured first place after we won our first game. I think now we need to help the club a little more, but we’ll obviously do everything we can. We also want to repay them for making this team possible. You know, we kind of won the Major, and now it’s about repaying them and trying to win this championship.
