Dota 2 remains one of the most popular games on Steam: in 2026, its peak concurrent players reached nearly one million. With such a massive audience, it’s inevitable that a “fan-favorite” list of popular heroes will emerge—those who are picked most often, regardless of the meta or patches. Some are popular because they’re easy to learn, others because they’re spectacular, and still others because they’ve remained icons of the game for decades.
The top 10 list below is based on statistics from Dotabuff and covers the entire history of Dota 2—from 2011 to the present (statistics current as of October 2026). The table takes into account the total number of matches regardless of game mode:

Phantom Lancer tops the list of the top 10 most-banned heroes with 5.96%—he’s feared for his illusions, which are very difficult to counter in the late game. Tinker and Outworld Destroyer follow closely behind: both deal massive damage, and it’s extremely difficult to kill them without reliable and sustained crowd control. Anti-Mage, Arc Warden, and Sniper are banned less frequently but consistently rank among the top due to their ability to turn protracted games around. Lone Druid, Huskar, Pudge, and Axe round out the top ten—these are heroes who are difficult to face on the lane and who punish mistakes made during the draft and throughout the game.
| Position | Hero | Pick Rate | Bans |
| 1 | Phantom Lancer | S | 5.96% |
| 2 | Tinker | C | 3.86% |

In the current meta, the top 10 heroes by win rate are those that either forgive mistakes or punish them. Wraith King leads with a 54.86% win rate, while Phantom Lancer and Outworld Destroyer excel thanks to their consistent laning. Meanwhile, Meepo and Nyx Assassin demonstrate that even difficult-to-master heroes can be effective when played at a high skill level. The only exception to the S-tier is Visage, who is rated A, but his 53.01% win rate speaks for itself. Rounding out the top ten are Spectre, Dragon Knight, and Legion Commander—heroes who most often come into their own later in the game.

Visage and Riki top the list thanks to their ability to dominate the map early on. Primal Beast and Dragon Knight are simple and effective choices for an aggressive, fast-paced playstyle. Meepo and Brewmaster are heroes for experienced players, requiring good micro and an understanding of timing. Marci and Phoenix are versatile, flexible heroes who can play multiple positions, including mid. Outworld Destroyer remains statistically the most consistent midlaner: he wasn’t touched in the patch, and he can hold the lane against almost any matchup. Vengeful Spirit rounds out the top 10 as a reliable tempo hero with the simplest mechanics possible.

Leshrac is currently the most successful—and therefore the most popular—carry hero in Dota, leading the win rate by a wide margin at 59.64%. He farms quickly, deals massive area-of-effect damage with Pulse Nova and Diabolic Edict, and pushes lanes exceptionally well. Wraith King and Phantom Lancer follow closely behind: the former excels thanks to his second life and farming/pushing with skeletons, while the latter relies on his illusions, which mean matches can’t be dragged out—otherwise, there will be nothing left to kill them with later. Vengeful Spirit, Necrophos, and Spectre round out the top five—these are heroes who shine most in prolonged fights.
| Position | Hero | Win Rate | Win Rate |
| 1 | Leshrac | S | 59.64% |

Rounding out the top ten are Vengeful Spirit, Pudge, Dawnbreaker, Dragon Knight, and Spectre—heroes who also prove to be highly active on the map and in team fights.

Grimstroke, Witch Doctor, and Crystal Maiden round out the top half—all of them provide the team with either control or area-of-effect damage. Techies, Disruptor, Ogre Magi, and Winter Wyvern round out the top ten: their win rate is just over 50%, but they remain useful as the match progresses and never fall out of the game.

Bounty Hunter tops the list with 54.7%—his Track ability provides the team with gold and vision, while Shadow Walk allows him to safely roam the map and farm creeps. Spirit Breaker follows closely behind with 54.05%: his Charge of Darkness applies pressure across the entire map from the very first minutes (just don’t pick him if you’re unsure you can make him work in the fifth position). Grimstroke, Zeus, and Mirana round out the top half.
