In Dota 2, there’s a long-standing belief that it’s exclusively a team game, where victory depends on the coordination of five players. In practice, however—especially at low and mid-tier ranks—the outcome of a match is often decided by a single player who manages to build up a critical advantage and simply “run over” their opponents all by themselves. Of course, this requires not only skilled gameplay but also the right hero—one capable of farming quickly, dealing massive damage to structures, and killing enemies on their own without relying on teammates. That’s why this article features the best solo heroes in Dota 2.
| Hero | Role | Advantage | Difficulty |
| Alchemist | Carry | Farms quickly, reaches the late game early | Low |
| Huskar | Mid/Carry | Snowballs quickly, high survivability | High |
| Lone Druid | Carry | There is a second full-fledged hero | High |
| Broodmother | Mid | Pulls up quickly, deals high damage to structures | High |
| Templar Assassin | Mid/Carry | High burst damage | Medium |
| Tinker | Mid | Mobile, pushes lanes quickly, can kill any hero | High |
| Ursa | Carry | High damage, can take down Roshan and the Tormentor on his own | Low |
| Arc Warden | Mid/Carry | Pushes lanes quickly, farms well, has a clone | High |
| Faceless Void | Carry | Can kill all enemies with a single ultimate, turning the tide of the match | Average |
| Wraith King | Carry | Second life; skeletons actively push lanes and destroy structures | Low |
Alchemist is one of the easiest carries to secure a solo victory. His Greevil’s Greed passively grants a massive amount of gold for every creep killed, so even basic farming earns him exponentially more gold than any other hero. If, after the laning phase, you’re left alone for even ten minutes, you’ll emerge from the jungle with three items, while the enemy carry will have two at best. With that kind of lead, snowballing and winning the game single-handedly becomes a trivial task.
What’s the main advantage:
Quick build:
Huskar is a classic hero often picked as a last-pick. With him, you can take down the King’s Throne in 15 minutes. His Berserker’s Blood makes him stronger as he loses health, and Life Break allows him to dive into fights and take down isolated targets. However, Huskar is also the riskiest hero—just a few deaths on him often mean the game will end in your opponent’s favor.
What’s his main advantage:
Quick build:
Lone Druid is a very strong hero for solo play in the current meta. If he gets Mjollnir and Aghanim’s Scepter, his chances of winning skyrocket, because a raging bear roams the map, splitting all lanes, dealing heavy damage to towers, and unafraid to die once. And unlike Alchemist, Lone Druid’s item cap is a full 12 slots, so he’s not afraid of games dragging into the late game either.
What’s the main advantage?
Quick build:
Once she reaches level 6, Broodmother camps in the enemy jungle, clears it very quickly, and is capable of destroying enemy barracks as early as the 20-minute mark. This hero doesn’t even require advanced micro-management skills at this point—just gather the spiders together and charge at the enemies as a swarm. Her Spin Web grants increased movement speed and the ability to move through obstacles, making her one of the best heroes for aggressively pushing lanes. Like Huskar, it’s best to pick Broodmother toward the end of the pick phase, otherwise you risk running into a potential Earthshaker.
What’s the main advantage?
Quick build:
Templar Assassin has everything it takes to carry in a solo lane: fast farming, damage against heroes, towers, Roshan, and the Torturer, and the ability to kill enemies on her own. Meld reduces the target’s armor, while Psi Blades allow her to deal damage from a safe distance. If she gains an advantage in the early game, Templar Assassin can snowball into the mid-game and end the match before enemies have a chance to build their core items. Her main drawback is her fragility and inability to fight head-to-head on equal footing. She can still secure kills, but doing so without the help of allies will be difficult.
What’s her main strength:
Build:
Tinker is the only mage among the top heroes capable of winning in a 1v1. He still needs his team’s help to push down the enemy base, but in a 1v1 scenario, he can single-handedly wipe out the entire enemy team thanks to his literally infinite damage. Laser and Heat-Seeking Missile allow him to take down single targets, while Rearm enables him to use items and abilities indefinitely. Tinker is valued because his damage doesn’t depend on his teammates—once he’s farmed key items, he can single-handedly turn any fight around.
What’s his main advantage:
Quick build:
Ursa is another excellent solo hero. Farm up Battle Fury and Blink Dagger—and you’re ready to run around the map killing enemies all by yourself. Ursa easily takes down Roshan and the Tormentor, and she’s very hard to kill thanks to her Enrage ultimate. Fury Swipes stack damage with each hit, making her one of the best heroes in one-on-one fights. Ursa is especially effective at low MMR because enemies often don’t know how to play against her and let her get too close.
Key Strengths:
Quick Build:
Arc Warden is a unique hero who is ideal for solo play thanks to his complex and multifaceted gameplay. He can function as either a carry or a midlaner, maximizing the potential of any item and dominating the battlefield. His ultimate, Tempest Double, creates a clone with identical stats and items, doubling the effectiveness of his artifacts and allowing him to engage in combat while minimizing the risk to the main hero. Flux slows and deals damage to a single target, and with Aghanim’s Scepter, the ability blocks the target’s abilities and increases damage. Arc Warden makes effective use of any item, but Boots of Travel and Hand of Midas stand out in particular—the clone can instantly teleport to allies, and Midas, with its dual activation, speeds up gold and experience farming.
What’s the main advantage?
Quick build:
Faceless Void is a hero who can win the game with a single well-timed Chronosphere. His ultimate can turn any fight around, and Time Walk provides strong laning and an escape mechanism that most carries can only dream of. Time Lock adds a decent amount of damage.
Key Strength:
Quick Build:
Wraith King is a timeless classic for solo play, especially at lower ranks. He has only one active ability, a built-in critical strike, and, most importantly, Reincarnation—the ability to respawn after death. Even if you make a mistake, you’ll get a second chance. The skeletons, which are summoned with a single click, automatically farm lanes and push towers while you’re busy with other things.
