Coach Justine: “A good player must have self-confidence and the right attitude and mindset.”

King of Gamers Club coach Justine Hamot (“Coach Justine”) Kanoi and the team’s jungler Ken Louis Bermudez (“Kzen”) Pyle appeared on the 8G podcast on the Wolf Casts YouTube channel, where they discussed the traits that help esports players succeed and commented on team captain Hiwko’s transition to assistant coach.
On the qualities necessary for a good player
Coach Justine: A good player must have self-confidence and the right attitude—the right mindset. If you only have one of these, you won’t be able to reach mastery.
Kzen: I’d like to add a third factor—commitment and dedication. A good player gives it their all in every match and every practice, as if it were their last game. The off-season has begun, and some esports players think something like, “There aren’t many tournaments right now, so I can relax.” However, that’s the wrong mindset; people need to keep working even during times like this. You need passion.
On Hiwko’s promotion to assistant coach
Coach Justine: After we assembled the roster and played our first few games, we realized that things weren’t quite right. After discussing our performance with the team, we concluded that we needed to make some changes. Our captain, Hiwko, wasn’t playing at his best. He’s very smart and has a good grasp of the macro game, but Hiwko was struggling with the micro, so we decided to replace him with another player. On the other hand, he’s still part of our team as my assistant, since he understands how Mobile Legends: Bang Bang works. I think this was the right decision because he really helps me out.
About Payen
Kzen: Payen is very hardworking. When I was playing in China, I could confidently message him about grinding ranks and count on his agreement. I liked the way he played. His mechanical skills are top-notch; he calmly holds his own against opponents on the lane and outplays them. Payen fits in well with the team, despite his youth, and listens to his teammates without saying a word. You can tell he’s eager to learn.
Coach Justine: Still, the guy is pretty restless. Also, sometimes we notice him being overly confident. I noticed this issue back during his tryout at King of Gamers Club. However, I think this is something that can be corrected over time. I haven’t seen any other issues with Payen.
Earlier, KOG jungler Kzen recalled the difficulties he faced while playing for the Chinese team Ying Jiang Nan and shared details about the region’s meta, which was shaped by the limited number of available champions.
