Instant smoke throws on Dust 2 allow the attackers to immediately secure the “mid doors” or the “long start.” This guide compiles ten throws with precise setpos and setang values: six for mid and four for long. Each spawn requires its own aim point. Starting positions may look almost identical, but even a slight difference in position changes the grenade’s trajectory. If you use the setang from a neighboring spawn, the smoke won’t land where you want it to.
This article breaks down two smoke placements: smoke on “Mid Door” and smoke at “Long Start.” Each card shows the respawn point, the aiming point, and the throwing technique. Setpos and setang are only needed for training on a local server. `setpos` teleports you to the desired respawn, and `setang` sets the exact aim. These commands don’t work in a match, so you’ll need to memorize the aim based on the map’s details.
Smoke at the “mid-door” blocks early vision through the center of the map. The grenade is thrown directly from the respawn, so the attackers don’t need to stop at a specific spot to aim.
There are two ways to throw here. From respawns 6, 8, and 13, stay in place and perform a standard jump throw. From respawns 1, 11, and 14, hold W and perform a jump throw while moving forward.
First, find your spawn point on the general map, then open the relevant section. The numbers aren’t in sequence, so memorize the spawn points separately for throwing from a standstill and while holding W.

A common mistake is holding down W at every respawn. If the smoke is thrown from a standing position, even a slight movement will alter the throw. Before performing a Jumpthrow, check the respawn number and the hints at the top of the card.
A smoke at the “long start” blocks early line-of-sight. The attackers can immediately continue their advance, and the smoke will clear as their teammates approach.
All four variations are thrown the same way. First, aim, then hold W and perform a jump throw while moving. Only the setpos and setang values change for each respawn point. Do not adjust your aim once you start moving.

Most often, the wrong respawn point is selected. Some spawn points are close together and look almost identical. Check the map number against the setpos and don’t use the setang from a neighboring option. Another common mistake is incorrect movement. On “mid-doors,” some smoke grenades are thrown from a standing position, while others are thrown with W held down. On the “long start,” you always need to hold W. After entering setang, do not move the mouse. The command already sets the correct aim, and any adjustment will throw the grenade off course. If you’re practicing without setang, aim first and only then press W or perform a Jumpthrow.
Launch Dust 2 on a local server, enable `sv_cheats 1`, and practice one smoke at a time. First, go through all the respawns for “mid-doors,” then move on to “long start.” This makes it easier to remember where to stand and where to hold down W. Copy the setpos and setang commands from the article and make five throws from each respawn. The smoke should land in the same spot several times in a row. Then remove the setang command and try to aim based on the map’s details. After that, practice quickly recognizing your spawn point and throwing smoke immediately after the round starts.
