Speeed shared some tips on playing Spirit Breaker

GamerLegion support player Paul “Speeed” Boccicchio recorded a guide on playing Spirit Breaker for his YouTube channel, in which he discussed laning, ability leveling, and teamfighting.

On Laning Weaknesses

This hero’s laning phase isn’t the best. You don’t have much armor. You don’t deal that much damage. Well, I mean, your damage is decent. You’re not particularly fast. He looks pretty fast because he has boots, but in reality, you’re not that fast. So the hero’s main weakness is laning. Everything else about him is incredibly strong. <…>

From the very first minute, try to find ranged heroes and close the distance to them. You should never stand in open areas. You need to constantly hide in the trees, attack from a distance, and use the trees to close the gap. Don’t chase after enemies. Don’t play among the creeps. Play only in the trees. <…>

In general, don’t play aggressively. Just try to keep the “five” away from your offlaner. If you create a one-on-one situation for your offlaner and block the small camp, that’s enough.

On Ability Leveling

You should almost always take Bash at level one and Charge at level two. At level three, as my friend advised me, Bash deals the most damage on the lane. So, if for some reason you want to focus on winning the lane—for example, if you’re playing Viper, Windranger, Death Prophet, or even Dark Seer—it’s perfectly fine to take Bash at level three.

But overall, in my opinion, in a more standard game where you don’t have many opportunities for kills, you should fully level up Charge by level seven and take Bulldoze at level four. Bulldoze is an excellent ability. It gives you 8% movement speed and 40% resistance to effects for just 30 mana. You might have mana issues, but here it’s only 30 mana for eight seconds of duration. That’s a very long time. 8% movement speed is a lot. <…>

You should never have a 2/0/2 build. You should always put a point into Bulldoze at level four, regardless of your build. I believe you should already have this ability by level four.

About Aghanim’s Shard

After activation—40% magic resistance for six seconds. That alone could be the entire effect of the shard. And, to be honest, sometimes you’d probably buy it just for that. Once you’ve cast it on someone, you take all damage intended for that hero yourself. <…>

If you’re playing against any kind of save, you simply take it for yourself. Against Wind Waker—you take it. Against any of the defensive items that are very common—Force Staff, for example—you take it. It’s incredible. You simply nullify any rescue ability. You might think, “But this only counters Dazzle.” No, I’ve seen it counter OD, literally. If OD is playing against you and tries to rescue someone, you just take the Astral.

On Getting Involved in Fights

It’s important to understand: when playing Spirit Breaker, you have to identify exactly who’s dealing damage. If you don’t do that and just charge into random enemies, you won’t kill anyone. Early on, you don’t deal that much damage. <…>

It all comes down to quickly killing your first target, farming, waiting for Charge, and diving in again. Many players just charge in and keep pushing forward—that’s a big mistake. You’re not a frontline hero. By the 20–30-minute mark, your auto-attacks aren’t nearly as strong anymore.

Earlier, Speeed named the best hero combinations in Patch 7.41f. One of the combinations—Spirit Breaker and Dawnbreaker—is good, according to the support player, because it allows you to quickly join the fight from anywhere on the map.
