Commentators Avery “SVG” Silverman and Austin “Cap” Walsh discussed the dominance of Eastern European teams in Dota 2 on the Not For Broadcast podcast. SVG noted that he’s tired of watching grand finals featuring Russian teams.
SVG: I hope other teams will step up this season. For the first time in a long while, it feels like a few frontrunners are noticeably stronger than everyone else. I don’t think it’ll be all that bad if, for a while, a few teams are noticeably stronger than the rest. But I hope teams from other regions will emerge that can also make their mark. Because, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sick of grand finals between two Russian teams—it’s almost the twentieth tournament in a row. I have nothing against their Dota, but I’d like to see a little regional diversity. That’s all.
Cap: I’ll never bash Team Spirit. And Team Yandex is much more interesting to me now thanks to Ammar. So when I look at this matchup, I don’t see it as “a Russian team versus a Russian team” at all. For me, that’s not the main point here. It’s more like “ATF vs. Yatoro.”
SVG: Yeah, that’s fair. I’m not saying the matchup was boring. But if we’re watching the same three teams all year long, it might get a little repetitive. Although I never get tired of watching Spirit—they’re always interesting to watch. Yandex can probably be considered a Western European team, one of the few representatives of the region, so I’m not going to bash them either. It just feels like everything is gradually centering around Dota from the CIS.
Earlier, SVG commented on OG’s revamped roster. The commentator noted that the team is capable of breaking into the world’s top 6–8, but expressed doubt about its success due to challenges with team chemistry among players from different regions.
