LGD Gaming support player Jingjun “Sneyking” Wu spoke about playing Winter Wyvern and discussed the importance of communication in Dota 2 during an interview at BLAST Slam VIII.
I don’t think I’m a huge fan of Winter Wyvern. It seems to me that Malady is the one who really excels at her. I think you just pick up on what the teams that win or perform well are doing.
Obviously, Team Yandex is one of the most successful teams—they won the last PGL. I just copy and study what other teams are doing, and I think she’s a pretty good meta hero for us right now. So I’ll just stick with what works.
I think the main challenge when playing with new teammates in general is reaching a common understanding, because everyone has their own vision of the game and their own interpretation of what’s happening, and a team can only function properly when everyone works together.
That’s why I think our biggest challenge so far has been to bring all these perspectives together and reach a common understanding, because we all come from very different backgrounds: we have different playstyles, different cultures, and different languages. So we have to overcome many obstacles to reach a common understanding. It all starts with language: many of us don’t speak English very well, but we’re gradually getting the hang of it and improving. It just takes time to learn to communicate effectively, reach a common understanding, and play well.
I’d say that understanding Dota 2 accounts for about 70%, and communication for 30%. I think that if you have a good understanding of the game and execute perfectly, you don’t need communication. Everyone understands what the best move is and what they need to do. In those circumstances, communication isn’t necessary.
But we’re not perfect, and we’re striving to be. That’s why we need extra communication. We need to work together and be on the same page. Even if our actions aren’t always the best, the main thing is to do everything together. That’s better than when everyone acts on their own.
I think Wits has a very good grasp of how much to farm. It seems to me that, regardless of the circumstances in the game, he doesn’t really tilt or get frustrated. He just plays according to the situation and keeps farming. I think that’s a very good quality that a carry player should have.
Sometimes a player might die a few times in a row on the lane, which can cause them to tilt and play worse. But I don’t think that happens with Wits. I think that’s a very important quality.
