Ranks in Hearthstone: How to Reach Legend and Can You Fall Out of Legend?

Gleb Brekhov
Hearthstone

Hearthstone’s Ranked mode consists of several leagues that players must climb through to reach the highest rank—Legend. As you advance, your opponents get stronger, and once you reach Legend, you earn a spot on your region’s overall leaderboard. In this article, we’ll break down the different ranks in Hearthstone, explain how Legend works, and discuss whether it’s possible to lose this rank.

To advance between ranks, you must win ranked matches and earn stars. After reaching Diamond 1 with three stars, the next victory promotes the player to Legend.

At the end of the season, players receive additional stars based on the rank they achieved in the previous season. Reaching Diamond 5 grants 9 bonus stars, Legend grants 10, and finishing in the top 200 in Legend grants 11 (bonuses are sometimes awarded for lower ranks as well). This allows top players to return to Legend more quickly at the start of the season.

What Is Legend in Hearthstone

Legend is the highest rank in Hearthstone. Once you reach it, instead of stars, your regional ranking is displayed—for example, Legend #532. The more wins you have, the higher your position on the leaderboard; losses can lower your ranking.

In Legend, matchmaking is based on a hidden MMR rating. This rating determines who you’ll play against, as well as your starting position after reaching Legend.

Can you be demoted from Legend in Hearthstone?

No. You cannot drop out of Legend in Hearthstone. Once you reach this rank, you remain in Legend until the end of the season, regardless of the number of losses. When you lose, only your position on the leaderboard changes—for example, from Legend #500 to Legend #3,000. There is no lower limit; at the end of the season in the European Standard format, you can drop as low as #30,000.

How to Reach Legend in Hearthstone

Reaching Legend requires a certain level of dedication—you’ll need to play about 200 games and maintain a win rate of 51% or higher. It’s slightly easier to reach Legend with meta decks; with them, your win rate can reach as high as 55%. Go to a deck-building website, choose a class that’s currently at the top, and build a deck that fits your playstyle—Aggro, Tempo, Control, or OTK. Keep playing until you reach Legend.

Reaching Legend will be even easier next season thanks to the Star Bonus. The key is to play regularly and not let a long losing streak get to you. If that happens, try switching to a different meta deck and come back the next day with a clear head.
